Men strip, assault two temple priests over financial row

MANGALURU/UDUPI: Two priests of Mahalingeshwara Temple, Karje in Udupi, were stripped and assaulted by a group of persons over a financial matter on Thursday.
Ramakrishna Adiga and Srikanth Adiga are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Ajjarkad, Udupi. Laxman Nimbargi, superintendent of police, Udupi, said the incident took place when the deepostava was in progress. According to the complainant, a group comprising Sudhakar Shetty, Navin Puthran, Tadalu Suresh Shetty, Kangibetti Balakrishna Shetty and others barged into the sanctum sanctorum at 3.30pm. They snatched the priests‘ cellphones, pushed them to the floor, assaulted and stripped them. They also threatened to murder them.

The complainants said it‘s because they had filed a case against Suggi Sudhakar, president, temple renovation committee, for alleged misappropriation of funds. Meanwhile, Raghavendra Bellanje, 31, accused the priests of insulting them and filed a case under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. In his complaint, he alleged the priests insulted him and asked him to get out of the temple.
